Car Camping Shakedown

August 25

Earlier this summer we spent a week in Camden Hills State Park. We have done backpacking and canoe camping but never car camping so we figured with 5 months of living out of a car coming up we had better give it a try. After enrolling the girls in gymnastic camp at the local YMCA for the mornings, we packed everything we thought we might need for the week and headed for the hills. There was plenty of room in the Subaru with our Yakima carrier on top, however we decided that we need to work on our organizational systems. We plan to experiment with a number of bins in the back of the car to organize food, swimming gear, cook kits, and even individual clothing and equipment. Most of the camping gear will be stored in the Yakima carrier.

The girls enjoyed the week and the camping. They toasted marshmallows, survived a thunderstorm, and listened to the owls. We prepared most of our meals at the campsite and spent the afternoons after gymnastics swimming or exploring the Camden/Rockport area. With only a few modifications we have the camping aspect of our trip under control. There are still lots of planning aspects to be ironed out, but we’re getting there!
