Moab and Colorado River Camping

Arches campsite on Colorado
Camping on the Colorado outside Moab

We’d heard from folks back east that both we and our vehicle would feel at home in Moab, and it was true!  There were Subarus with top carriers everywhere and plenty of folks looking like they’d just rolled out of a campsite. It’s a full on recreation town with bicycle shops, adventure outfitters, climbing tours, rafting trips, and guided anything you can imagine.  There were also way too many coffee shops and cool looking restaurants for our timeframe and budget. Folks at the Moab Visitor Center (a very informative group) gave us the lowdown on camping and directed us towards a stunning spot on the Colorado River not far from the entrance to Arches National Park, where we could camp for only $7.50 a night.  What a deal!

Young entrepreneurs!

Jud and I set up camp while Addy and Isa delved into the local red dirt and started mixing up a paste to make their own petroglyphs on the campsite rocks.  Soon they were waving at vehicles and holding a roadside sign stating, “Come see the petroglyphs. 25 cents! Make your own too!”  They were having a blast and explained to me that they were going to try to help contribute to our trip costs.  No one stopped to see the petroglyphs, except me, but you can’t get cheaper entertainment some dirt and some experiential education!
